Independent trade union activist threaten by State Security

HAVANA, Cuba - February 26 (Víctor Manuel Domínguez, Sindical Press / www.cubasindical.org) - The president of the Confederation of Independent Workers of Cuba (CTIC), Carmelo Díaz Fernández, was visited at his home Monday by three agents of State Security who threatened him to send him to prison.

During one of the Literary Teas, which customarily take place at the independent library Martí-Washington with the participation of poets and writers, the agents came to the door and asked Díaz Fernández to step out with them.

Once outside, and after identifying themselves as Camilo, Samuel and Alexei, told the activist that failure to relinquish his position at the CTIC, and to end his activities, including the creation of independent trade unions, he could return to jail –his medical leave revoked.

Furthermore, he will not be granted permission to leave the country because this is "only given to those who do not attack the Revolution".

Carmelo Díaz Fernández stated that he will not abandon the struggle until all the unionists in prison –serving long sentences since the spring of 2003- are released and the rights of Cuban workers respected in the country.
